The flotation pool: what it is, how it works and how it feels

An experience of weightlessness and disconnection that you will only find in one place in Córdoba.

The first time you float

The first time is strange. You lie back in the water expecting to sink a little, as in any pool. But you do not sink. The water has a mineral concentration that holds you up effortlessly. Your shoulders stop working. Your lower back stretches out. Your legs relax. The body stops fighting gravity and begins to let go of everything it has been carrying.

Then comes the calm. When your ears are partially submerged, the outside noise disappears. Only your breathing remains. And breathing, with nothing to interrupt it, becomes slow and deep on its own.

It is not meditation. It requires no technique or concentration. It is simply what happens when you remove gravity and noise from the equation. The body knows what to do.

What the science says

Therapeutic flotation has been studied for decades. The evidence shows significant effects on reducing cortisol (the stress hormone), improving sleep and relieving chronic pain — especially in the neck, back and joints. Researchers at Karlstad University in Sweden found that regular flotation sessions reduce anxiety in a way comparable to other therapeutic interventions.

But you do not need to read studies to feel it. After twenty minutes of floating, most people describe a sensation they find hard to explain: a deep calm that is not drowsiness, a lightness that has nothing to do with weight.

Our flotation pool

The flotation pool at the Arab Baths of Córdoba is integrated into the hammam circuit. It is not a closed tank or an isolation pod — it is an open pool with the same filtered light and the same atmosphere as the rest of the baths. You can float with your eyes open, looking at the stone arches, or close them and stay alone with your breathing.

The water temperature is calibrated so that you feel neither cold nor heat. The boundary between your body and the water simply ceases to exist. That thermal neutrality is what allows the nervous system to relax completely.

It is an unusual feature in Arab baths in general — a pool dedicated to floating, integrated into the circuit. And one that, once you try it, becomes the main reason to come back.

When to float during your visit

You can float at any point in your two hours of access. But if you let us recommend a moment: after the water circuit and the massage. When the body is already warm, the muscles relaxed and the mind serene, flotation takes all of that one level further. It is like the final chord of a piece that already sounded good.
