Rosemary: the scent that awakens
Córdoba smells of rosemary if you know where to look. It grows wild in the sierra, on the paths to Medina Azahara, in the gardens of the Alcázar. It is a plant so rooted in this land that using it in the steam room is not an aesthetic choice — it is a continuity with the landscape.
Rosemary essential oil has stimulating properties. When diffused with the hot steam, its volatile compounds — especially 1,8-cineole — reach the airways and produce a decongestant, clarifying effect. It is not exciting or aggressive. It is more like opening a window in a closed room: air comes in, clarity comes in.
In the context of the hammam, rosemary counteracts the drowsiness that prolonged heat can produce. It keeps you present, attentive to the sensations, without letting you sink into a daze.
Orange blossom: the scent that calms
Orange blossom is the flower of the bitter orange tree. In Córdoba it blooms between April and May and fills the streets with a scent the whole city recognises. Its essential oil — neroli — has been used since antiquity for its sedative, anxiety-relieving properties. Recent studies confirm what tradition already knew: the scent of orange blossom reduces heart rate and cortisol levels.
In our steam room, orange blossom is the counterpoint to rosemary. If rosemary wakes up your senses, orange blossom tells them that everything is fine. Together they create a state our guests often describe with the same word: balance.
How to make the most of it
Enter the steam room after the first round of pools, when the body is already warm and the pores open. Breathe through your nose, deep and slow. The first three or four minutes are the most intense — that is when the aromatic concentration is most perceptible to your sense of smell. After that, the body adapts and the effect becomes more subtle but keeps working.
Do not stay more than ten minutes at a time. Step out, take a contrast in the cold pool, and come back if you wish. The alternation between aromatic steam and cold water is one of the best-kept pleasures of the hammam.
